Bulgaria- Demographic Profile

Stage of demographic transition model: 5, shrinking population. Declines by 164 people a day

REASONS:
·      Lack of employment- as of April 2015, 1/10 are unemployed
·      Women choosing to have less children, if any

Bulgaria has the Fastest shrinking population worldwide

Future struggles:

Since the population is decreasing by an average of 164 people a day, Bulgaria’s future is not positive. In order for Bulgaria to hopefully increase their population, it must be moved out of stage 5 in the demographic transition.
Since 1960, the median age of Bulgarian’s has severely increased. In 1960, the median age was just over 30, whereas in 2012 the age had increased to almost 43 years old.

In order to improve, the following are essential:
  •         Improving education so that the older population is still aware of current information
  •         Providing employment opportunities for all
  •        Reducing the pension deficit
  •         Allowing everyone to receive a pension
  •        Improving health services so that the aging population can live longer
  •         Improving conditions in old people’s homes, to cater for the older population
  •         Saving for the future to allow encouragement for more children
  •         Increasing their employment
